CHAPTER 19

Blair careened around the corner of Crawford and Lancaster.  The car was handling exactly like the salesman promised—pinpoint accuracy.  She thanked whatever fate had a hand in her decision to buy it.  She forced herself to calm down.  She could handle this situation.  No doubts about it.  What was really worrying her was that she couldn’t reach Todd.  His cell phone was cut off or dead, which made no sense at all.  She was about to lose her mind thinking that something had happened to him.  She had to stay calm.  Starr’s life depended on it and maybe Todd’s too.

Why was this happening?  Why?  The only person who could tell her was Rick.  If she could just get within a few feet of him she would kick the life out of him unless he told her where Starr was and what happened to Todd. Her heart was racing.  Hadn’t she been through enough?  All she ever wanted was a family.  All she ever really wanted was a husband who loved her and children she could love.  She and Todd had crawled naked through broken glass to get this far, could life really be so cruel as to take it all away over some stupid business decision?

How crazy was this Wyatt person?  She was willing to accept the fact that this was all her fault but for the life of her she still couldn’t understand why Rick-Wyatt would take Starr.  If he wanted to get back at her, why not focus on her?  She was a big girl.  She could take it.  Why hurt her baby?

She pulled into the parking lot and looked around carefully.  There were a number of cars but few people.  None of the cars looked like something Rick would drive.  But then he wasn’t really Rick was he?  Wyatt?  Rick?  The name thing was driving her crazy.

There were two entrances to the parking lot and no clues to which direction he would come from.  There was also no sign of Antonio or his men.  For once in her self-serving existence Téa seemed to have played fair.  If she had a few minutes, maybe she could talk to Rick and make him understand that whatever grudge he had against her he should take out on her, not Starr.

Blair tried Todd’s number again but the phone was still disconnected.  She took a deep breath and got out of the car.  There was no way Rick could have missed her entrance.  If he was here, he would come out now.  She stood up straight and zipped her black leather jacket.  She leaned against the car and tried to appear nonchalant.  She didn’t want to attract troubling attention.

She slowly scanned the area.  Where was Rick?  Where was Starr?

======

Téa sputtered along in her rental car.  Damn, Blair drove fast.  If she didn’t know where Blair was going, she would be lost by now.  She pulled into the parking lot holding her breath.  The place was peaceful.  The West-End Parking Lot was miles and miles and MILES away and unless Antonio actually grew a brain, it would never dawn on him to check out this lot as well.

She saw Blair ease out of her car.  Téa pulled in ten or so cars down from her. Her nondescript car fit right in with the other cars.  No one would pay any attention to her.  Just as she cut off the engine she saw Wyatt walking over the hill toward Blair.  Her heart stopped short.  He had on jeans and a black leather jacket.  His hair was floating on the breeze. He walked with such assured arrogance that her knees felt weak. Wyatt had never been one of those bad boys who just created an image.  He was the real thing.  The irony was that the one thing he would not do was hurt a child.  Starr was in no real danger from him, but Blair might be in BIG trouble.

She could hear Blair and he yelling at each other.  She couldn’t make out the words but she could feel the vibrations and the venom.  She suspected she had an idea what they were arguing about.  She smiled.  Wyatt wouldn’t believe Blair.  The man put the “p” in paranoia.  Maybe everything would blow up right here.  He did threaten to put a bullet straight through Blair’s forehead.  Well, actually through Starr’s mother’s forehead but that was just semantics.

Téa felt mesmerized by the scene that was unfolding.  Her knees felt weak and her stomach flipped in anticipation.  She was holding her breath.  Wyatt edged closer to Blair.  Wyatt’s hair whipped in the wind.  Blair’s arms were outstretched as if she was about to fly.  Wyatt reached into his pocket. Téa gripped the steering wheel.  What was he going to do?

The sparks around them changed suddenly.  To her amazement, they seemed to calm down.  They walked toward each other.  Even from a distance Téa could see that Blair’s body had relaxed.  This was not good.  If Wyatt told her about… She was not going to let this happen.

Téa spotted five or six college aged or so boys heading toward a car.  They would just have to do.  She jumped out of her car and rushed along behind the parked cars to get closer to Blair and Wyatt.  She drew in a lung full of air then screamed as if someone was trying to kill her.  The sound ricocheted around the quiet park.

Blair and Wyatt swung around toward her.

“Wyatt, don’t believe her,” she yelled pointing to the confused teenagers.  “It’s a set up.  They’re going to try to kill you.  Don’t trust her.  There’re sharpshooters everywhere.”

Wyatt reacted exactly as she expected.  He pulled out his gun and lunged for Blair and grabbed her.  He clamped his hand over her mouth and dragged her toward a nearby car.  Blair fought him but he hit her and then punched her again.  Téa saw Blair’s body go limp.  Wyatt shoved Blair into the car.  Téa heard the rumbling sound of engine firing up as Wyatt started his car—a black Dodge Viper.  He didn’t even look back as he threw the car into gear, shot out of the parking space and took off in the opposite direction.

Téa watched the dust whipped up by the retreating car.  Poor Blair. Wyatt was probably going to hurt her. That was a shame--not that Blair didn’t deserve that and more.  Bitch just should have stayed out of it.  She’d learn that soon enough.

She smoothed her skirt and glared over at the young men who were staring at her. They watched her for a minute longer then scampered into their car.  Probably thought she was crazy.  Good.  No one would ever believe any description they gave of a hysterical woman and sharpshooters.  What were they on, Ecstasy?  Besides she noticed that none of them rushed to help poor pathetic Blair as some maniac dragged her off, stuffed her in a car and drove away.

She chuckled as she slid into the rental car.  First, she would take this car back and get another, just in case those crack heads did report seeing her then she probably needed to go find Todd and let him know his poor, dear wife had been kidnapped, too.  He’d need a shoulder to cry on and a sympathetic ear and eventually someone to soothe his troubled soul. Besides, Wyatt knew she was in town now and would probably come looking for her and the first person he’d start with was Todd.

The image of Todd and Wyatt going at it over her, made her breasts tingle with an erotic vibration that headed south so fast she had to throw her head back and exhale from the rush.
