CHAPTER 2

Todd slipped into the house and, even though it was late, he was surprised by the stillness that greeted him.  How many times in his life had he entered places where no one was waiting for him or even cared if he was there?  But lately there had always been someone there like a light in a window guiding him home through the dark.  His family was safe, just asleep, but even that small disconnection felt like a loss.  Although he would never admit it out loud, how much he loved them scared him.  How much he needed them scared him more.

Todd checked on Starr and found her fast asleep.  He shook her gently until she looked up at him with sleepy but reproachful eyes.

“I’m sorry about messing up movie night,” he whispered. “I’ll make it up to you.”

Starr yawned then frowned and rubbed her eyes.

“Come on Starr.  I said I was sorry.”

She nodded, reached up and hugged him then turned over and went back to sleep. He sat beside her on the bed for a while then kissed her on the forehead and slipped quietly into the hallway.

He eased into Jack’s room and found him sprawled on his stomach with his thumb in his mouth and his eyes fluttering as if he was in deep sleep. He watched Jack breathe for a few minutes then pulled the covers up over his body and tucked him in gently.  A profound sense of sadness lashed across his consciousness. He brushed his hand across his eyes to wipe away the tear that threatened to show itself in pure defiance of his will.  He looked quickly around the room then leaned over the railing of the crib and kissed his son on the cheek.  What he and Blair had gone through to make a life with this child was a story he didn’t like to think about--the sheer amount of the pain, the betrayal, the deceit and the anger was enough to drown him.  In the end, though, it had come down to the simple fact that she wanted more than anything to give him a son and he wanted more than anything for any son of hers to be his.  What would she do if she knew?

Blair was sitting in bed reading what looked like a report of some kind, probably for Moon Jumping, the company she had just started. He stood out of sight for a few seconds and watched her.  She was biting her fingernail and her head was bent forward so that her hair brushed against the papers in her hands.  For a minute he tried to memorize every detail of her. He had learned the hard way how important it was to make memories to hold onto. He took a deep breath and stepped into the room.

She looked up slowly.  “Hey.  Where were you?  We were worried.”

"Everything's okay now."  He locked the door.

She focused her gaze on his face.

He could see the questions in her eyes but she didn’t say anything else.  Instead, she closed the report slowly. He walked next to her and took it out of her hand then tossed it lightly on the floor.  She started to protest but he began to unbutton his shirt.

She smiled slightly and tilted her head to the right. "So what happened?  Did you turn left instead of right in the video store and end up spending some quality time in the wrong section?"

He grinned at her as he pulled off his shoes and socks.  "Debbie Does Cincinnati just came in. And you know what that means."

"Serious business?"

"Yes, indeed. I have to take care of serious business."

Blair threw her head back and laughed.  He watched her with a measure of awe. Sometimes she just took his breath away with her openness to him, with her willingness to love him. She looked at him again and wet her lips as her gaze drifted along his body.  He knew she could read how much he wanted her and he knew her body so well, he could see it responding to his need without a single touch. But he was going to touch her and there would be a chain reaction that would feel like riding the biggest, glassiest wave imaginable.  Their bodies would move in a coded sequence that was their own language. No one ever had or ever would be able to speak that language except the two of them.

“Will you take your hands off of me please?  You’re going to wake up the children.”

"Me? You’re the one screaming.”

“Well, if you would give me a chance to breathe.”

“Sorry.  Got to make sure you know who you belong to.  Got to make sure you know you’re my woman.”

 “I know. I swear I know.”

“Do you?  Here’s a test.”  He moved his hand between her legs and she threw her head and moaned loudly.  He moved closer and found her mouth then kissed her hard.

He pulled back slightly and looked her in the eye. “Tell me how much you love me.”

“I can’t breathe much less talk.”

“Tell me.  I need to hear it,” he said softly.

“I love you like life itself.”

 “Is that all?”

“Please, if you’ll just stop moving your hand for a minute, I could…”

He grinned. He loved it when she lost it like this.  The slightest touch from him sent her into a spasm.  It was like his private lie detector.  Every touch from him sent her closer to the edge and she had absolutely no capacity for lies.

“Have you ever loved any other man like you love me?”

“I’ve never loved any other man but you.  Never.  Oh, God, Todd.  Please.  I am so ready for you.”

A surge shot through his body.  Whatever his babe wanted she got. He moved on top her then inside of her as he raised her arms above her head.  He began to stroke her with an increasing pace.  He felt her body tremble in waves of excitement and suddenly an inexorable wave of exquisite tension flooded his body and he couldn’t hold back any longer.  As he exploded in her all he could think of was that she was his and nothing in this world or the next would ever change that fact.

Blair was sleeping.  He stared at her and ran his fingers lightly along her body.  It had been a bad decision to come home and make love to her. He sensed danger closing in on him and what they say about danger and sex must be at least halfway true because what had happened between them for the last few hours had been more than he dared hope for. When they were like this he allowed her to do the one thing he never let anyone else do and always swore no one would ever do to him--he allowed her to gain total control over him. She owned him and there wasn’t a damn thing he could or wanted to do about it.

He rolled away from her and forced himself to get out of bed.  He had to move so he could lay claim to his body again and think.  What he needed to do about this Ireland mess was no longer clear-cut at all.  The only thing that was clear was that he could not lose Blair.
