CHAPTER 11

Every nerve in Blair’s body seemed to fire at once.  She jumped higher than she thought humanly possible even though she knew within an instant that it was Todd.

“What did you say?” she stuttered as her breathing came in short, shallow breaths.

Todd moved closer to her.  “Where the hell have you been, Blair, dressed like that?”

Blair stepped back as a surge of anger shot from her brain straight down her spine, which straightened as if by reflex.  “What the hell are you doing in my bedroom?”

She glanced over at the security intercom again.  No one notified her of his presence when she drove in and there was no message indicated on the machine.

Todd followed her gaze.  “Don’t worry about them.  They are not going to disturb us.”

Blair swallowed then steadied her voice.  “Why aren’t you home with the children?”

He just stared at her.

The intensity of the expression on his face made her nervous.  She gently moved her head so that her hair fell off her shoulders then stuck her hands in her pockets.  “I just ran into the wife-of-your-heart, so are our children alone?”

Todd walked toward her slowly.  “Where were you, Blair?  Who were you with?  Where did you see Amanda?”

Blair watched him.  She didn’t like the tone of his voice or the expression on his face.  She had seen him like this before.  He was angry, arrogant and desperate--a bad combination where Todd was concerned.  She turned to walk out of the room but he quickly moved in front of her and slammed the door.

“You’re not going anywhere.  Not until I get some answers.”

Todd stared at Blair and told himself to chill out.  But still, she had no right to look like that—not when she was out with someone else.  What the hell was wrong with her?  Why did she have to make this harder than it had to be?

He moved closer to her but she stood her ground even though he could see anxiety in her eyes.  Good, because this had to stop.  She had to remember what was between them and how he reacted when some other man put his hands on her.  He had been giving the kid the benefit of the doubt but this…

Blair walked to the bed, flopped down and leaned her head slightly to the right so her hair flowed to one side.  She crossed her legs then rested one hand on the edge of the bed and the other on her lap and said, “What do we need to get straight, Todd?”

“I know you were a little upset about what I did with the baby…”

“Jack.”

“I know his name, Blair.  Damn it.  I told you I was sorry.  I brought him back as soon as I found out…”

“He was yours.”

“Yeah, well I brought him back. That’s what matters.  He was only away from you a few weeks.  That’s all.”

Blair jumped up as if she was about to grab him around the throat but then stopped in mid-flight.  She breathed deeply and wrung her hands as she walked over to the French doors and stood for a few minutes looking out at the dark landscape.

“I don’t want to have this conversation,” she said finally breaking the silence.  “I don’t want to remember all of the ugliness again.”

“Neither do I but you don’t seem to be able to let it go.  It’s between us like this huge black space that sucks everything into it whenever we get too close to each other.”

She turned around slowly.  “Poof,” she said waving her hand.  “Consider it gone.  Anything else we need to talk about?”

She was really starting to tick him the hell off.  He pushed his hair off of his face, tried to control the shaking in his right leg and glared at her.  If she thought he was going to tuck tail and run then she was in for a huge disappointment.

He stormed over to her and grabbed her by the shoulders.  “You know damn well that’s not all of it.  We’re married damn it.  And I want what’s mine.”

She twisted forcefully out of his grasp.  “If you think you’re going to have me again, if you think I will ever let you touch me again, if you think I will ….”

He grabbed her and kissed her.  Hard.

She struggled in his arms but he held her and pressed closer to her.  The touch of her body was mesmerizing him.  He had waited so long to touch her.  She moved suddenly and caught him off guard.  He relaxed his grip on her. She pulled away and slapped him.

It hurt like hell. He rubbed his cheek and stared at her.

Her breathing was so labored that it seemed like she couldn’t speak.  He clearly saw the fire in her eyes.  When the words finally came they seemed to rush out in a torrent of rage.  “Back the hell off.  Don’t you ever forget that this is my body.  Mine. Don’t you EVER forget that. Don’t you ever…”

The sound in the room seemed to collapse into the singular ticking of a clock.  Time moving backwards.  A feeling of nausea spread quickly through this stomach as he felt waves of damp heat and frigid chills sweep over him.  Did she really think he was going to…?  He stumbled backwards but kept his eyes locked on her.  Slowly, he saw her expression change from anger to concern then alarm. He kept moving away from her.  She stepped closer to him.  He looked at her for one more second then turned and made long strides toward the door.

“Todd,” she called, “I’m sorry.  I know you would never…”

He wasn’t listening to her.  He needed some air.  He needed to get out of that damn bedroom.

She grabbed him from behind but he wretched himself out of her lock and pulled away forcefully.  She held onto his shirt and he tried to snatch it out of her hand but she held on.  He pivoted toward her and yanked at it furiously.  He wanted her to let it go.  Let him go.  But she still held on.  The shirt ripped and gave way with the buttons popping off and the front flying open like curtains in a theatre.

Blair made a loud gasping sound.  She searched his face as if looking for some kind of forgiveness for a major lapse in decorum and then in what felt like slow motion, her gaze drifted to his chest.

She jumped back and tented her hands over her mouth.

Tears sprang in her eyes.

“Oh, my God, Todd.  What happened to you?”

He wanted to move, he wanted to leave, he wanted to get the hell out of there but he was locked in place.  She took a step toward him then reached out and touched the scars on his chest so gently it felt as if she was kissing them.

She kept asking what happened over and over.

Her voice was putting him in a trance.  It had been so long since he had heard love in her voice. So damn long.

She moved closer then wrapped her arms around his neck.  “Oh, baby, oh, baby, oh, baby.  I’m so sorry.  What happened to you?”

When her body touched his this time he felt a sense of completeness that was so intense it was oceanic.  He could feel every hair that touched his face individually.  He smelled her perfume and felt the hot points of her breast pressed into his chest. He held her tightly and moved his face so that the soft kisses she was tapping on his face could touch his lips.

He didn’t care what had triggered it.

He didn’t care why.

Blair was in his arms again and he was not going to let her go.  He picked her up and carried her to the bed.  He removed his shirt and heard her gasp again.

He didn’t care.

All he wanted was to feel her hands on him, to touch her, to be inside of her again. He wanted to come home to her
