Suite A Llantano Mountain Suite
Anne Lamott noted hearing once that hope is revolutionary patience. This room is dedicated to hope and to all of the promises of love made in good faith even if in the end those promises were broken; to holding on when logic tells you to let go; to taking a leap of faith when everything tells you to cut your losses; to promising beginnings and bittersweet memories; to the great expanse in between love and sorrow. HOPELESS JEALOUSY MOTHER LOVE CRAZY FAITH
Hopeless: Todd is drinking at Rodi’s and nursing a broken heart over Rebecca who is now dating Powell Lord when Blair captures his attention. He is grieving his lost relationship with Rebecca and the many changes that have occurred in his life. Todd tries to make peace with what he perceives as Rebecca’s betrayal, “I’d tell it to your face but you lost your face along the way.” Oddly enough, however, as Todd grieves his lost relationship with Rebecca, he simultaneously, although unconsciously, begins to connect to Blair, “Is anybody waiting at home for you.” Even though it will be quite a while before either of them consciously realizes how much they really connected that first night, Todd and Blair are kindred spirits, soul mates, who on some deep level recognize each other instantly. From their first conversation each realizes that the other knows what it feels like to question whether “you are up or down, in or out, lost or found.” They become friends but Blair steals Todd’s heart away before he even realizes what has happened. All he knows is he wants “to get his hands on her and see what tale time will tell.” Train’s song “Hopeless” (Drops of Jupiter) then operates on two levels. On one level, Todd is grieving the loss of Rebecca and wondering why his life had to change. On the other level, he finds himself falling in love with Blair. The last refrain poses this question: “I hopelessly, helplessly, wonder why everything’s gotta change?” The answer to question is that things had to change so he could find the love of his life, his one true babe, Blair.
Jealousy: Todd returned to Llanview 2000 with an agenda. He wanted his family back. Most of all he wanted Blair but Blair was married to Max. Although, Todd pretended to be concerned about Starr living in Asa’s house with Max serving in some quasi role as a stepfather, what was really killing him was seeing Blair with Max. When Starr announced that Blair was planning to give her a baby brother but she’d rather Todd be the father, it gave Todd the excuse he needed to blow Blair’s marriage to Max out of the water. Just as the road seemed clear for Todd and Blair and they were about to remarry, Max set a trap for Todd and he fell right into it. Max led Todd to believe that Blair slept with him the night before their wedding. Todd reacted as he often does—he set out to hurt her but underneath all of the rage, all he wanted was to have Blair come home to him. “I can’t stand seeing you in somebody else’s arms. It drives me out of my mind…” sing Frankie Beverly and Maze (Silky Soul).
Mother Love: Being a mother has never been easy on Blair. She has lost two children under tragic circumstances and been caught in multiple custody battles for her daughter, Starr. And now in the current storyline Todd has led her to believe her baby son is dead although unbeknownst to her she has been raising him for the last few months as her adopted son. Through it all she has loved her children. This slideshow is a shameless tribute to Blair’s love for her children and her love for Todd as well. “It’s only love that gets you through,” sings Sade (Lovers Rock). MOTHER LOVE
Crazy Faith: One of the painful things about watching T&B right now, during the spring of 2002, is that the dead baby lie is still hanging over their heads and haunting their relationship. Todd is spinning more and more lies to keep his secret hidden and Blair looks increasingly clueless as she accepts the explanations Todd offers. Yet, Blair is not really clueless, she is in denial. She knows something is up but is choosing not to see it. It is as if she is saying to herself: I know something is wrong but I also sense that once I find out what is going on my marriage may be over and I don’t want to let go. So for right now I’ll stay blind (choice) and trust Todd to make whatever it is right. Whatever is going on can’t be that bad, can it? Unfortunately, it is that bad but Blair is for now buffered and protected by her faith in Todd. “The bottom of our love is deep, made by crazy faith,” sing Alison Krauss & Union Station (New Favorite). As a side note, this slideshow was made as a "birthday gift" for Melody Dawn, who along with Ladyday suggested that I listen to Alison Krauss for which I am extremely grateful.
